About Us
Independent Distributors Ltd. (IDL) was founded on cooperative principles established in 1962, when a group of friends and family sought to strengthen their purchasing power in order to compete more effectively with larger organizations. Among the original contributors were Jack York, Jim York, D.D. Gardner, and Keith Harper, shareholders of York Auto Supply with locations in Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Yorkton, and Regina, Saskatchewan. Additional founding members included Thompson Auto in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, owned by Wally and Jimmy Walker, and Northern Auto in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, owned by Larry Tatchell.
The group formally incorporated in 1964, as recalled by Ritchie York, grandson of Jack York. From its early beginnings, IDL evolved into a successful buying group, enabling members to benefit from increased purchasing power while maintaining their independence. Membership steadily expanded to include like-minded shareholders across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia.
Over time, IDL’s growth extended beyond the automotive aftermarket sector into the industrial, commercial, and heavy-duty markets. This diverse and dynamic membership base ensures strong support for all members, regardless of whether they operate in small rural communities or large urban centers.
As the organization continued to grow, IDL shareholders made the strategic decision to partner with Bestbuy Distributors Ltd., recognizing a strong alignment in values, foundation, and long-term growth objectives. This partnership remains robust today, delivering significant benefits to members across Canada. Notably, collaborations with organizations such as Federated Auto Parts Group and Affiliated Distributors to further enhance value for members of all sizes.
IDL maintains strong alliances with leading suppliers and manufactures without franchise restrictions, allowing members to access optimal purchasing power in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
